Isle del sol

Isle del sol

We finished up in La Paz, grabbed some empanadas and boarded a local collective for 20 Bolivianos headed for Copacabana. The drive itself is nothing to write about it. We are arrived at the lake crossing and all jumped off the bus boarded a little speed boat and watched curiously as our bus boarded what look liked a make shift ferry boat. It becomes pretty obvious why we had to leave the bus. A big gust of wind would surely blow the whole thing into the water. Well thats what we thought.

After arriving in Copacabana we opted to walk around searching for accommodation rather than pre booking. Although there are some really nice almost fairy tale like accommodation we found a nice cheap one back from the water.
Copacabana in general is nothing special. The streets are lined with restaurants and bars all offering a similar thing. We did find the local market where you can get a whole fish for 20 bolivianos, definitely worth it.
The day we left for Isla De Sol it decided to rain, so we were inside the cabin the whole way to the island. There are two landing points on the island. Isla south and Isla Norte. It really doesn’t make much difference. Isla South is where the majority of the accommodation is. Jump off here drop your luggage off and you can walk to the north and get a boat back, or just walk back on the coast route. We came a little unprepared and because everyone was staying on the boat we just assumed this was the way to go. We jumped off at the north point with our bags and were hit with the reality of either waiting for a boat to go back about 2 hrs or just walk like everyone else.

Again it was slightly drizzling but not enough to stop us from enjoying the walk. The walk itself is quite spectacular and quite demanding as well. You can opt for the coast walk or a walk along the ridge line. We went for the higher option, and the views were well worth it. Even on a overcast day we were still impressed by the beauty of the place. Make sure you bring cash for the walk as there are 3 different check points to pass through. Can’t remember the exact cost but allow 60 bolivianos per person and you will be fine.
After arriving in the south town we were a bit unsure where to go. We just followed the trail to the left and walked down through the town. Most people opt to stay up in the town as that is where the majority of accommodation and restaurants are. When we walked through everything was closed up for siesta so we made our way to the water and found some great accommodation overlooking the bay.
