Freycinet National park

Well the infamous family holiday is over. A nice relaxing week in sunny Tasmania, YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!

We decided to fly direct to Hobart, grab a car and head north along the east coast to Freycinet National Park.

The drive up was amazing with some great scenery and cool little wineries to break it up. We decided to drive up to Bicheno for lunch as it is only about 15kms from the turn off to Freycinet. This was one of our favourite towns to visit. A Quaint little sea side village that we were told comes alive in January. We were happy to have it to ourselves.

We had lunch at the famous Gulch. No website to look it up but don’t let that stop you. If you are after traditional fish ‘n’ chips on the water make sure you stop here. Wine is served in a plastic glass, the restaurant is rustic, the beer is cold and most importantly the food is fresh and delicious.

After filling up on seafood we made our way to our accomodation in Freycinet. We stayed out of the main area, in the town of Swanwick at Studio 59 Holiday Home. There is not much in this town so stock up on supplies before heading into Freycinet. There are a few restaurants and pubs but if you want to stay in and cook the corner store is quite expensive and limiting.

Our accomodation was nice but for the price we were after a bit more. The bed was very squeaky and one of us ended up sleeping in the pullout couch to get a good nights rest.

Unfortunately the majority of the time it rained whilst up in the park. We did get a 3 hour window of sunshine and we made the most of it by climbing up to Wineglass bay lookout with little Noah strapped in. He loved the walk and I think was just as excited to see some sunshine.

The walk itself is very easy and the view is incredible from the top. We hung out for about 20 minutes and then made our way down. Please whatever you do, do not rush off once you get back down. There are so many little secluded beaches worth exploring. We only got to look at them for a short while as the rain started back up again. If we had our time again we would spend the whole day beach hoping around the area.

After exploring the park, fighting cabin fever and munching on the delicious seafood we made our way back to Hobart for the weekend.

Take your time heading back and be sure to drop into one of the many wineries on offer. We opted for Craigie Knowe. Don’t ask us why we chose it but we did and do not regret our choice. With no one else in site we enjoyed our afternoon wine tasting and sampling some chocolate.
